chAPteR 11

Nightfall found Simon stripping off his clothes in the back of Aaron’s truck, parked at the end of a dirt lane. The air was frigid on his skin, but he swung the door open before shifting. He could open door handles in wolf form, but they were hard on his teeth, and vice versa. And even in a fiberglass-bodied truck, there was enough steel to make shifting easier with the door open. In the front, Aaron got naked with the nonchalant ease of long practice. Simon spared him a glance, just because he could, and because looking shouldn’t be a crime. Aaron was beautifully built, long hard muscles under that olive skin, not bulky like Simon, but sleek like a distance runner. He looked both taller and more powerful out of his clothes. The fine scattering of dark hair at his groin hid nothing. He was…proportionate, and beautiful.

Aaron must have felt Simon’s gaze, because he turned. But he just raised one eyebrow, with no effort to turn away. Then he shifted, the change rushing swiftly over him with astonishing speed. He was completely silent.

Simon hurried his own shift, reaching for the energy, so bountiful out here that even the truck around him did not block much. Large windows and open doors were sufficient, when the sky arced overhead. He held back a groan as his body twisted, pulling, reforming. It was an odd pain, shifting. Almost like that moment before orgasm, when the worst thing in the world would be to not go over, and yet it didn’t exactly hurt. He felt his cells lock into wolf form, and suddenly he was back. The smell of leather and gasoline, man and fabric, was strong in his nostrils. He raised his head from the seat and shouldered out of the door.

Aaron stood on his hind legs in the snow to lean on his door and shut it, so Simon did the same. Then he paced over to the other wolf. Aaron’s wolf was jet black, brown eyes faintly glowing in the light of the cab windows. Then the cab timer went off, and the truck went dark. Aaron became a dark shadow against the grey of the snow.

It was a cloudy night. Even to werewolf eyes, the world was dim. People forgot what night was really like, living in cities where there was always reflection of artificial light from something. Out here, the night was a velvet darkness that wrapped around you, waiting to trip unwary feet if you moved wrong. Simon’s eyes adapted quickly. He saw Aaron looking at him, and nodded his readiness. Aaron set out, moving swiftly through the trees. Simon set himself to follow just as fast and silently. Or almost. Jesus, Aaron was good.

They found the place where the attack on the bull had been reported. Quartering the ground, noses active, they each found traces of the bull’s blood. At least three snowfalls had covered the ground since then, and a thick layer of ice had formed with the melting and freezing.
